The Falcons made an early splash in free agency this weekend signing cornerback Dunta Robinson.

Robinson a six-year veteran who has spent his entire career in Houston comes to Atlanta with 13 career picks and four sacks. The Athens native also has more than 300 tackles and 84 games experience. He missed seven games in 2007 (knee) and five games the follow year except otherwise has been a durable cornerback. He started 48 straight games from 2004-2006 including 16 love a rookie.

His six interceptions as a rookie put him in elite corporation and had some whispering of possible Pro Bowl consideration. He had 10 passes defensed and two picks (one for a touchdown) in 2006. He also leaves Houston as the young franchise s all-time interception leader. He was named the 2004 Pro Football Weekly Defensive Rookie of the Year and the 2004 Touchdown Club Rookie of the Year.

Robinson (5-foot-10 184 pounds) was hit with the Texans franchise tag last season but the team opted to let him test free agency in 2010.

The Falcons re-signed starting cornerback Brian Williams Thursday afternoon but the position is serene widely regarded as one the team could upgrade through free agency and/or the NFL Draft. Atlanta was led in interceptions in 2009 by second-year player Brent Grimes (six) but the team finished 28th in the union against the pass allowing an average of 242.1 yards per game through the air.

In a message to Falcons season ticket holders Friday General Manager Thomas Dimitroff described Robinson as aggressive athletic and fast. The Texans played various defensive schemes during Robinson s tenure including some time in the 3-4.

Robinson and the Texans decided to part ways last month.

Sometimes things occur like this when you re dealing with a tough deal like the NFL Robinson said in e-mail to the Houston Chronicle. I don t regret anything at all.

Robinson also thanked Texans leadership and the town of Houston for support through the start of his career.

ESPN s Adam Schefter reported Saturday morning Robinson signed a six-year deal with the Falcons the front-runner for his services since the start of the free agent signing period.

As an aside I worked with Robinson during his rookie season in Houston. It takes a lot for a player to have success in the secondary as a rookie mentally and physically.

His six interceptions as a first-year player should say something.
